How many times have you heard a celebrity you admire say that they were influenced by someone else, someone who came before them or who was working nearby? They admired their music, fashion sense, ingenuity or desire to be more creative. If you’ve found your way to this website it means that you have an interest in being creative. And if you spend some time looking at different forms of art it can have a profound impact on your life.
When I was beginning my career as an artist I was a lost soul. I was trying to develop my skills and to find what it was I wanted to say. Time passed, And kept on passing. And eventually I fell into a time when I was really not painting at all. I thought of doing other things, desperately groping around in the creative landscape for something that I could sink my teeth into, and hopefully excel at. But sometimes I would find a short-lived success, and sometimes not have the courage to try something new.
Then I took a trip to England. Not surprisingly I visited most of the art museums there, which were awesome. Every single one. I loved following people around and listening to their comments on the paintings. (Please keep in mind that the wondrous internet didn’t exist). One day I ended up in the National Gallery and stopped in front of a beautiful and monumental work of Carlo Crivelli. I sat and stared at this painting for quite some time. And moved on to others and didn’t rush through the museum trying to see every one. I just focused in on a few paintings that I really wanted to “see”.
I came out of that museum really “getting it”. It was also amazing to find that I had more skills than I imagined I had when I started to paint again.
Maybe you might like David Bowie and his glam aesthetic, you might admire Elsie de Wolfe and the way she defied everyone and stuck to her vision. Or maybe it’s Daniel Day Lewis and how he transforms himself and finds all the details in the characters he portrays.
Whomever you admire, listen to their interviews, watch their television appearances, read their autobiographies and dance to their music. Examine their hair cuts and the stitches in their seams. You may just come out with some new ideas for yourself. Do some research and find what will work for you. Find your true self and express that in the most creative way you can. Being true to yourself.
